Performance Management
Each month I sit down at my computer and, through the miracle of Google Hangouts, have virtual "Performance Management" meetings with each of the principals in the district. This is part of the Blueprint that connects the work done at the buildings with the district through the Performance Management Driver System. The purposes of the Performance Management Driver are:
- To understand and respond to the quality of the Blueprint’s installation.
- To review and respond to each building’s analysis of multiple measures of data to determine whether they are on track to meet or exceed its annual performance goals.
In addition to these purposes, the performance management driver also provides building leaders with a template on which to gather a significant amount of building performance data that they can review monthly with their BAN (Building Acceleration Network) to help drive the work being done in each building and to measure progress of efforts already underway.
During a performance management meeting, each principal has approximately twenty minutes in which to lead the group through their data and to talk about successes or struggles they are having. This process helps me understand how far along we are as a district in implementing the Blueprint, as well as to gauge how well each of the individual buildings are progressing toward their annual performance goals. Twenty minutes might seem like a long time, until you consider all the items covered on the performance management template. Here is an example of some of the items discussed during these monthly meetings:
- Total Enrollment
- Move ins / Move outs
- Total # of Students with IEPs / 504 Plans
- # of Students Receiving STEP Services
- % of Economically Disadvantaged Students
- Annual Performance Goals (M-STEP / SAT)
- Attendance Rates (Staff & Student)
- Office Discipline Referrals
- Suspensions
- % of Students at or above the 60th %ile on NWEA
- % of Students Passing Classes, Earning Credit, or Passing Common Unit Assessments
- # of HQV Observations Conducted and % of HQV Observed
- Overall Blueprint Installation Status
- Effective use of PLCs
- Data Based Conversations to help make Instructional Decisions
So yes, the twenty minutes goes by pretty fast! The best part of these meetings for me is listening to principals talking with each other and learning from one another about how they have handled particular items in their data. This collaborative approach ensures that knowledge of what works is being transmitted across buildings and provides an important support for the challenging work involved in educating our students. We started conducting these meetings last November and continue to modify and improve the process, data collection, and information gathered. It is an important part of the Blueprint and one that I am sure will continue to guide our efforts in the months and years to come.

Stats:
* There are 51 teams and 491 students currently participating in basketball.
* 24 teams and 218 players participating in 4th-5th girls basketball.
* 27 teams and 263 players participating in 6-8 boys basketball.
* There are 10 9th-12th grade students working as score board operators or basketball officials (plus another 10 students wanting to get involved) giving back to the program and getting educated on the responsibility and expectations that come along with employment.
Staff: You can find LEAP Elementary Sports Manager, David Payne, traveling throughout our district on any given weeknight (or Saturday morning) visiting our elementary schools making sure coaches are being thanked for volunteering and kids are having FUN!

- Principals, the second Leadership Conference is due (shared with me in iObservation) by 5:00pm on January 19, 2018. Make sure to select the building leader framework so that the elements match up with your goals (not district leader).
- Last day of school for 2017 is December 21, returning in 2018 on January 3.
- The December Curriculum Committee meeting has been cancelled. The next meeting will be Thursday, January 18, at 7:30am in Conference Room C at Boardman.
